The Cupid Factor
Thinking of popping the question somewhere special? These options will help you drop to your knees.
Carlisle Bay
Traditional romantics will thrill to the idea of popping the question over dinner for two under a coconut palm at the water’s edge in one of Antigua’s sleekest luxury resorts. Book in advance and Carlisle Bay will arrange a special table right next to the ocean under the tree of your choice, complete with orchids, a personal chef and the whole paraphernalia. If you ask nicely they may be able to arrange a full moon. An equally enchanting option is their Jetty Dinner, which also has a serious wow rating when it comes to romance: dinner at the end of their spectacular jetty, with complete privacy and nothing to distract you but the gentle lapping of the ocean waves.
Cricket, Sir Vivian Richard’s Stadium
Imagine the scene: the roar of the crowd, the thrill of the moment as your proposal is relayed live via the big screen or the scoreboard during a match in what, for some, is the heartland of West Indies cricket. It could even secure you fleeting international fame if the match is televised, but at the very least it will create an indelible memory. You’d need to be seriously organized for this one, so be sure to seek approval and assistance from match organizers well in advance.
Devil’s Bridge
Devil’s Bridge is nature in the raw, the perfect place to bare your soul – rugged, windswept, dramatic, beautiful … and very rocky! (Although it’s probably wise not to draw attention to any negative marital associations!) This natural limestone arc or ‘bridge’, formed by relentless pounding from the Atlantic, comes complete with spectacular blowholes that spew out sprays of surf high into the air. Courage mon brave!
Hermitage Bay
Guaranteed to transform even the frostiest ice-maiden or polar man into a hopeless romantic, Hermitage Bay in Antigua is the ultimate lovers’ hideaway. The ultra chic hillside cottages have luxurious bedrooms, en suite bathrooms, outdoor showers, wrap-around patios and spacious private plunge pools! Completely secluded, overlooking the ocean and with stunning views of Montserrat and Nevis, it’s hard to imagine a more idyllic spot. If you don’t get a “yes” here, the sad truth is you probably won’t get it anywhere!

On a Jet-Ski
People get up to some extraordinary antics on jet-skis. So why not hire one and plight your troth while scooting across the glistening waters of Antigua’s spectacular coastline? Downsides: you may have to shout and you won’t be able to go on one knee, unless skilful or foolhardy. Upside: after you’ve done the deed you can head for one of Antigua’s breathtaking secluded bays and clinch the deal in … well, in whatever way seems right. Don’t drop the ring overboard.
Pink Sand Beach, Barbuda
Nothing like sparkling waters, the hot sun, a deserted beach and a bottle of bubbly to get the juices flowing. Many of Antigua’s and Barbuda’s exquisite beaches and bays are serious candidates for the perfect proposal. But for the added Cupid factor why not take the plunge on Barbuda’s jaw-droppingly beautiful eight-mile stretch of pink and white sand beach, which runs from Spanish Point to Palmetto Point? Yes, pink sand. Stroll for miles without seeing anyone, absorb the serenity and pick your moment. You can take a boat or plane to Barbuda from Antigua and stay for the day or check in at Lighthouse Bay or Coco Point Lodge.
On a Secluded Island
You may not be able to buy your own island but how about taking the big step on a secluded one? Antigua is blessed with a number of exquisite outer-island jewels that would serve well as the setting for any Crusoe-style narrative. Options include Bird Island, Green Island, Maiden Island and Prickly Pear. But be sure to research your dream isle properly as they’re all quite different. Access? Either take your pick from one of the day-sailing tour companies or charter your own boat for the day (if you’re a qualified sailor you’ll need to submit the relevant documentation).
Shirley Heights
Impressive at any time, these views would really take your breath away when featuring as the backdrop for a proposal. Be sure not to pick a Sunday for your mission, at least not after 3pm, when the tourists start arriving in coach loads for rum-punch, steel pan, barbecue and nonstop partying – guaranteed to cramp your style! But any other day would be perfect … particularly at sunset. This spectacular historic lookout is one of Antigua’s star attractions and commands spectacular views of Falmouth Harbour, Montserrat and, on a clear day, Guadeloupe.
