Catherine’s Cafe

Catherine’s Café is one of the south coast’s culinary ‘it spots’, where diners revel in the authentic French fare, chilled vibe and jaw-dropping views. The picturesque restaurant is magnificently situated slap bang over the water on Antigua slipway, with Nelson’s Dockyard, Fort Berkeley and the wide open sea in sharp focus ‘ in other words, it’s an impressive package.

The food is simple, freshly prepared and delicious. Dishes range from classics such as moules marinière, clam gratinée, fish tartare, rack of lamb and beef tenderloin to more unusual and local choices that focus on the best Antiguan produce ‘ lobster and fresh fish in particular. Deserts include irresistible classics such as tarte tatin and crème brûlée. The wine list is exclusively French, with options for high rollers and the budget-minded alike. There’s also a good selection of champagnes.

Catherine’s is especially popular for lunch. Sunday lunch is almost an institution here, when the place is buzzing and vibrant. Service is very friendly and the mood is relaxed, so meals are leisurely. The restaurant undoubtedly attracts its share of some of the island’s well-heeled big spenders but prices are reasonable and the more price-conscious can skip the foie gras and champagne and zoom in instead on more modest options, such as homemade quiche or a salad niçoise. Then it’s just a case of kicking back, a glass of perfectly chilled rosé in hand, and checking out those views. Visit during April or December and you can also enjoy the unique spectacle of the world’s swankiest yachts and boats passing within a few feet of your table.
