Lone Star Restaurant and Hotel

Known internationally as the place to see and be seen in Barbados, the glamorous and chic Lone Star Restaurant has a breezy beach bar atmosphere during the day, but come dusk it transforms into a buzzing nightspot as the glitterati descend to mingle and tuck into tasty international cuisine with a Caribbean twist.

Whilst enjoying your tuna tartar or fresh blackened dolphin with sweet potato mash, glance up from your plate for a spot of celeb spotting. Mariah Carey, Simon Cowell, John Cleese, Michael Caine and Kylie Minogue have been known to drop by, and you may even recognize owner Christian Roberts from his roles in the movies ‘To Sir with Love’,  ‘The Anniversary’ and ‘The Desperados’.

The Lone Star has come a long way since it started life as the only petrol-selling garage on Barbados’ west coast in the 1940s. Its original owner, mechanic Romy Reid, was a fan of Hollywood Western movies, who called himself ‘The Lone Star of the West Coast’.

Located just where you’d expect to find a garage – close to the main west coast road in St James – the Lone Star offers the height of exclusivity, with just four luxury air-conditioned suites, each named after an automobile legend (Cord, Studebaker, Lincoln and Buick). These airy rooms offer a complete contrast to the bustling restaurant. The peace of your private terrace overlooking the beach is perfect for romantic candle-lit dinners.

Decorated in a cool contemporary style, with King-sized beds and huge mirrors leaning nonchalantly against the walls. The dark wood floors and furniture contrast with the white walls and furnishings, creating a viril feel in keeping with the hotel’s past life as a garage, but without the slightest hint of grease. All mod-cons are provided, including flat screen TV, DVD/CD player, Wi-fi, fridge and tea/coffee facilities.  The spacious bathrooms are decked out with robes, fragrant products and showers large enough for a whole team of mechanics.

  • Make the most of the complimentary soft drinks in the mini bar.
  • Book breakfast in your suite the night before to enjoy a private view of blue sea and yachts.
  • Because of its successful restaurant, Lone Star is quite busy at certain times of the day, so be aware of this if you want seclusion.
  • There’s no spa, gym or pool, but with a white sandy beach complete with comfy sun-loungers on your doorstep, they won’t be missed.
