Sugar Cane Club Hotel & Spa

If you’re looking for complete peace and tranquility look no further than the Sugar Cane Club.

Built in the 1970’s, on a forested hilltop overlooking Barbados’ glamorous west coast, this charming family-run boutique hotel has an exotic Mediterranean allure but with a distinctly Caribbean flair.

Expect to be greeted with rum punches upon arrival, and encouraged to kick back, relax and let the friendly staff take care of it all. Manager Rod Weatherhead and family have over 20 years experience in the hospitality industry and it shows! Sugar Cane Club is ranked third among Barbados hotels on TripAdvisor, and since its 2008 renovation has won gold and silver awards with Virgin Holidays three years running.

The lush tropical grounds give way to dramatic views of the gully below and the golden coast beyond. The scenery pays homage to simpler times, when vacations were truly relaxed, guests mingled socially and everyone could simply forget their worries and sip cocktails with nary a care.

There’s no hustle and bustle here, this is the authentic West Indies.

Forty-four self-contained suites come with fully equipped kitchenettes, private balconies, and all the modern amenities. Tasteful rattan furniture and local artisan work add flavor to an already tangible tropical habitat.

The Penthouse suite has two spacious en suite bedrooms and is significantly less humble; the view is breathtaking and kitchen large enough to host your own soiree.

Families are welcome but the hotel maintains an age limit of 14 years and older; this ensures peace and quiet for guests that come to get away from it all, a luxury lost in many big chains.

The hotel offers guided walking trails through the gully; afternoon jaunts are recommended as the trail conveniently ends at Sandy’s Chattel Bar where Bajan cuisine, rum shop ambiance and a good lime are to be found four evenings a week.

La Salsa in the main building offers a la carte and buffet dining with a variety of international and local cuisine and the bartender Ricky is quite the cocktail virtuoso.

But of course the Weatherheads believe in selling the experience, and three nights a week dinner is served poolside, and happy hour leads to starlit dining and local live entertainment. The atmosphere is straight out of a James Bond film….no limbo experience required….we’re all grown ups here.
