The high-fashion feel LaLuna exudes manages to take the breath away the moment you arrive and start to explore.

Neatly tucked into 10 acres of a green hillside on the southwestern tip of the Caribbean’s Spice Island, it’s an exclusive luxury resort comprising 16 brightly-colored and luxuriously-appointed private guest cottages, all overlooking a beautiful bay.

Collectively, these one- and two-bedroom villas are the realization of owner Bernado Bertucci’s dream of creating the perfect, romantic, stylish retreat with the help of two celebrated architects, Gabriella Giuntoli and Carmelina Santoro.

Step into any one of the cottages and Bernados influence – a subtle mix of Indonesian and Italian style – is to be found everywhere in the decor. Each cottage has been constructed based on an ancient Mediterranean formula in which specially-treated cement is individually impregnated with pigments of easy-on-the-eye hues such as sunburst yellow, sienna and warm cinnamon.

The interiors, moreover, are invitingly chic in a minimalist style. King-sized Balinese beds with Italian linen sheets of the highest quality dominate the bedrooms, natural cotton drapes and swathes of Asian fabric add a soft touch and create a romantic atmosphere that would be ideal for honeymooning couples.

The rooms lead out on to expansive private bamboo-roofed, shaded verandas, giving a panoramic view of the ocean. And each veranda also has a private 31-foot square plunge pool.

Uniquely, the bathrooms in the cottages have been specifically designed to be discreetly open air to provide ocean views as you shower and avail yourself of bathroom products fashioned by monks in the Italian Alps.

LaLuna has a main swimming pool deliberately sited right on the resort’s white-sand beach so guests can take a dip in the sea, come back to enjoy the fresh water of the pool then flop down to sunbathe on the teak poolside loungers.

The thatched-roof dining room also stands right on the beach, thereby offering twinkling stars as regular dining companions and the gentle sound of lapping surf as constant background accompaniment. Fittingly, the restaurant specializes in Italian cuisine with a Caribbean influence.

LaLuna is an emphatically chic retreat that undeniably owes much to high design. Since it opened five years ago, its elegance has prompted the likes of supermodels Jerry Hall and Kate Moss and rock star Dave Stewart to check in to savor its relaxing essence.

And yet, for all its classy demeanor, LaLuna still manages to offer a delightfully refreshing simplicity. The surroundings may be ultra-stylish, but the resort generates an admirably friendly ambiance. Thankfully, too, LaLuna has no time for posers, kick off your shoes and relax is the order of the day, every day.
