Mount Cinnamon Resort

The white washed buildings with red clay tile roofs cling to the hillside, arched doorways and balconies with wrought iron railings covered with flowering bougainvillea and steep paths meandering upwards are reminiscent of a Mediterranean village. But the spectacular ocean views, bright light, warm sun and sounds of steel pan music are pure Caribbean.

You have arrived at Mount Cinnamon Resort, Grenada and a very welcome icy cool towel and refreshing rum punch are being offered by a smiling staffer who will shortly escort you on a guided tour of the property before settling you into your chosen accommodation.  Whether you’ve come for a weekend getaway, a romantic honeymoon or two weeks of pure relaxation you will not be disappointed.

A ‘boutique’ resort, Mount Cinnamon is part of the prestigious, worldwide de Savary collection of properties. As such its 21 suites and villas offer understated luxury. All are fully air-conditioned and spacious. Sitting rooms have comfy upholstered couches and well equipped kitchens feature top-of-the line appliances.  Bedrooms have separate dressing areas, unusual adobe-style shower rooms and masses of cupboard space.  Furnishings are bright – lots of oranges, greens and blues – and stylish.  Works of art in bold colours adorn the walls.  Balconies with wonderful views are perfect for dining in the cool of an evening. Practical ‘extras’ like laundry facilities have not been overlooked – you’ll find the washer/dryer very handy on an extended stay – while BOSE sound systems, cable TV and wifi access enhance the ‘at home’ feel.

But there’s more:  Savvy’s Restaurant located on the verandah of the main building with stunning views across the bay to picturesque St Georges Harbour serves a la carte breakfasts while the dinner menu features traditional West Indian dishes, fresh local seafood and a selection of kids’ favourites.  Expect wonderful fresh fruit and vegetables grown on Peter de Savary’s country estate, Mt Edgecombe, which, incidentally, is well worth a visit when you’re looking for a change of scenery.

However, with the superb Grand Anse beach a short walk across the garden it’s hard to tear yourself away from lazy days at Mount Cinnamon’s stylish private beach club. Catch some rays on a sun lounger while sipping a rum punch, cool off with a dip in the ocean and follow it up with a casual lunch from the grill.  Bliss!

A yoga session with yoga guru Mit Sukha followed by a massage at the beach side cabana soothes and de-stresses.  Other pampering treatments are available at the Cinnamon Spa while the tennis court and gym are perfect for working off those unwanted calories.

And when you’ve had enough of peaceful solitude get ready for a lively Friday night when the Beach Club is abuzz with steelband music and sizzling barbecue.

A croquet lawn is an unusual sight in the Caribbean where cricket pitches are more the norm.  But management at Mount Cinnamon are proud of their silky smooth croquet lawn and plans are well underway for the staging of the inaugural De Savary Challenge, this winter. What could be more civilized than the clunk of a mallet against a wooden ball under clear blue skies with gentle waves lapping the beach only a stone’s throw away.

Service at Mount Cinnamon Resort reflects the intrinsic friendliness of Grenadians. Whether it be the all-knowledgeable Israel shuttling you up to your suite or villa in the golf cart, the chatty room attendants offering tips on where to plug in your iron or hair dryer, the bar and restaurant staff explaining the intricacies of tropical drinks and food, or the lovely ladies at the front desk who can arrange all things to see and do in Grenada, it’s all done with unhurried grace and charm.

Repeat guests at Mount Cinnamon are the norm rather than the exception.  There must be something special that keeps them coming back!
