At the Blue Hole mineral spring in Jamaica, you can jump off the cliffs into the natural pool or climb down a ladder and bathe in the water, which is said to have therapeutic properties.
The Blue Hole is located near the tourist resort of Negril in western Jamaica to which locals and visitors are flocking for both health reasons and the thrill of leaping into the glass-like water of the mineral spring. It’s 22 feet from the edge of the cliff to the surface of the water and then another 35 feet to the bottom. If brave enough, you can fling yourself into the chilly depths, which feels absolutely exhilarating. Or you can be wowed as the lifeguard demonstrates an acrobatic feat of leaping out of an overhanging tree to dive 55 feet into the spring.
The underground pool is approximately 40-by-50 feet, so you can swim around and get a good workout or just float and meditate in the clean, clear water. Reflected ripples of sunlight dance on the limestone walls like flickering flames, while the pervading silence soothes the soul. Around the sides of the spring, there is a natural mud reputed to be good for the skin and which bathers like to rub on their face and body.
‘The water is very good for you, it energises and refreshes you, especially if you’re feeling really tired,’ says Wellington ‘Wabba’ Clayton, who is the manager and co-owner of the property. The spring was long known to exist but had lain undisturbed until a couple of years ago.
It was when Matt Lamoureux, a visitor from the United States, chanced upon the spring that he realised its potential and formed a partnership with Wabba to develop the Blue Hole as an attraction to create jobs in the area. They cleaned out the spring, had it tested by the health authorities and installed the ladder, as well as building the surface swimming pool, bar, grill, volleyball court, and cabanas. They have just completed three rooms where visitors can stay overnight and another 13 are under construction.
Soon to come: a restaurant which will be supplied by organic vegetables from the Blue Hole’s own garden.
Turn off the main Negril to Savanah-la-Mar road at Negril Spot, drive towards Little Bay and the Blue Hole is located just before you reach the beach at Brighton. Alternatively, you can charter a driver from Negril or call Wabba on 1-876-860-8805 and he will collect you.
