Julan’s Closet

She’s taken the catwalks of the Caribbean by storm, all billowing sleeves and top hats, lace and satin. Steamy little numbers whisper of petticoats and ruffles, and below-the-staircase undressing. It’s surely only a matter of time before Sarah Jessica Parker is spotted in a Julan jumpsuit and white bell-sleeved shirt with matching parasol and Manolo Blahniks.

Of course since Juliette is designing for the Caribbean climate, her fabrics are thin and light, in bold colors that would have certainly caused a scandal back in the day. Ruffles of white peek provocatively out from beneath a raging royal purple satin. Turquoise and gold light up the 1950s silhouette, accented by pockets, necklines and waistbands in brilliant stripes. Demure bustles nip in at the waist, rising to a stunning corset, coquettish ruffles and impish lace-smothered top hat. Fabulous enough for fashionistas, yet not too outlandish. You can actually wear the clothes to a wedding or dinner without causing smirks.

So if you’d like your own Carrie Bradshaw number, Juliette can easily rustle up something in silk and leather. Or make you a jumpsuit with a plunging neckline. A graduate of the Edna Manley College of Visual and Performing Arts in Kingston, she is also based there. She works from home, and has a loyal seamstress whose needlework is impeccable. You may pay her a visit, or check out some of her clothing in De Gap at the Wyndham Hotel in Kingston and Staysie’s in Half Moon Village in Montego Bay.

Oh, did we mention that her prices are actually reasonable’ It’s only a matter of time before that changes too.
