Come on Over – Buzo Osteria Italiana

Somewhere in the countryside, an Italian Mamma is happy. Her handed down recipes, lovingly and freshly made each day is used with care and perfection by her grandson, Executive Chef Christian Grini. Born in Urbino, Italy, Chef Grini brought his favourite home-style dishes to Trinidad, hoping that locals would love his culinary ‘home’ as much as he does.

The fact that Buzo Italian Osteria is listed as Trinidad’s most popular restaurant seems to allude that locals have indeed embraced his gastronomic offerings wholeheartedly. Hand-made pastas, pizza dough and an increasing array of sumptuous sauces have been delighting patrons ever since Buzo opened one year ago, in 2011.

Sporting an über cool, beautifully austere martini lounge, the vibe is chill and intimate with low lighting. For families and warm gatherings, the show kitchen and pizza bar envelops guests in gentle warmth and the earthy perfume of roasting garlic. The décor seamlessly blends modern lines with century old walls.

The to-die-for paper thin made-to-order pizzas are divine and bursting with simple, yet rich flavours. The pastas are subtle, but the accompanying flavours are complex and delightful. I won’t even bother recommending just one, they’re all delizioso!

Buzo’s martini bar is also something to behold, from the enviable array of select champagnes to their signature cocktails. Have a bottle of Prossecco with your meal and you’ll have the perfect pairing for the decadent sauces and pastas. The freshly made squid ink pasta with seafood is surprisingly light and smooth. My favourite is the lasagne, along with the fabulous focaccias.

For a romantic, first-date night out, I’d head out to Buzo for sure. Families and trendy professionals will also find the space charming. Possibly one of the top five fine dining restaurants in Trinidad, better book your table now if you want to experience the full Italian anytime soon.
