Chop Chops Gourmet Market and Bistro

Who’s ever heard of roasted grapes on a pizza’! I tried this seemingly mad concoction during a recent visit to Chop Chops Gourmet Market and Bistro on Mucarapo Road, Trinidad. The hot, sweet burst of grapey-flavour married with the savoury mozzarella and basil really surprised me. The inventive menu comes from Chef George Aleong, pizza lover and owner of Chop Chops, who describes his bistro as the place to come for that ‘down-home cooking’ that seems to be lacking in Trinidad.

Also serving up fresh fish and shellfish when he can get it, Chef Aleong sticks to his guns when it comes to freshness. Don’t be surprised if you’re told there is no fish or lobster for the day, because Chef doesn’t serve what he did not hand-pick that very day. The same goes for most of his herbs and vegetables. Chef Aleong also provides pre-packaged and pre-seasoned meals to-go for busy folks. Just cook and serve!

A throwback to the days when school children would ask each other, ‘what did your mom cook today’, Chop Chops has become almost the same. Chef Aleong loves the fact that his loyal customers call him up to ask what he’s got cooking that day. From fresh salads to a divine Thai Shrimp Curry (mild) and fresh fruit smoothies ‘ try the Blueberry, it’s refreshing tang acts as a palate cleanser of sorts ‘ Chop Chops has something for every culinary preference.

Now back to those gorgeous pizzas! Chop Chops also boasts a pizzeria that’s like no other in Trinidad. With inventive ingredient options like the Saltfish Pizza, the Caprese which comes with a balsamic reduction and the ever popular Mushroom Medley Pizza served with a white sauce, Chop Chops invites diners who desire sumptuous fare. Other favourites are the Pork Sausage Pizza, with all the ingredients, including the sausage, made in-house and the Love Triangle (the name says it all!).

Chop Chops is a fantastic restaurant for those looking for good, unfussy food in a relaxed, trendy space. If you’re in the mood for fish or seafood, I’d call ahead and ask Chef ‘what yuh cook today man’ just to avoid disappointment.

  • ‘Everything is fresh! So fresh in fact, that if they don’t get it, they don’t serve it.
  • Call ahead. Chef loves interacting with his customers, so don’t be shy.
  • ‘No delivery, awww. Take-out is not recommended, but customers can do so at the risk of losing some of the hot-from-the-oven fabulousness.
  • Free WiFi ‘ yeaye!
  • Space can accommodate small parties. Call ahead and ask about their different options.
  • Chef will entertain reasonable menu requests.
  • Exotic teas for purchase.
