Renaissance St. Croix Carambola Beach Resort & Spa

As if the St. Croix Carambola was not already incredibly chic, its recent conversion to a Renaissance property has taken it up a notch, making it the only big-name branded hotel on the island. Carambola’s joining the Renaissance family means much more than a change in moniker: everything from the pool deck to the lobby underwent a face lift, and the guest rooms were all redone to ensure that those familiar with the Renaissance brand are greeted with the standard of luxury they have come to love.

Underneath its shiny new exterior, however, remains the simple elegance long associated with the Carambola, which was created by Laurance Rockefeller in 1986 to capture the cultural heritage of this island that he loved so much. The resort pays homage to St. Croix’s Danish heritage with its traditional red roofs, and the island’s Creole culture is evident in Carambola’s symmetry and central entrance.

The resort boasts one of the largest hotel spas in the Virgin Islands, complete with a substantial bridal party prep area, and a specialty beach cabana, where the cooling trade winds only add to the sensations you’ll discover during one of their numerous massage offerings.

We’d be remiss in talking about the Carambola if we didn’t mention its proximity to the Davis Wall, one of the premier diving sites in the Caribbean. Walk right off the beach and swim out just 100 yards to where the sea floor plunges more than 12,000 feet, and you’ll witness majestic ocean life at play from vibrant tropical fish and coral reefs to sea turtles and sting rays gliding through the crystal clear Caribbean Sea. Humpback whales also pass through on their migration, and guests have been wowed with impromptu shows put on by the mammals frolicking just 100 yards off the beach.

Also nearby is Cane Bay, a funky north shore collection of bars and restaurants, and the Carambola Golf and Country Club, featuring a lush 18-hole course winding through the valley. But to be honest, we wouldn’t blame you if you throw open the doors to your screened in patio, welcome the delightfully salty breeze into your room as you sink into the plush bedding and decide that you never want to leave.

  • After the sun has set, seek out one of the few hammocks at the resort and snuggle up with your honey. The sound of the waves lapping mere feet away paired with the inky night sky whose stars shine brightly set the stage for a magical evening.
